5 Ways to Incorporate Black in Interior Design
Hey friends! Today I want to talk about incorporating black in interior design. We all know that black is a staple when it comes to fashion (queue the little black dress). But did you know that it is also the building block for good interior design?
Even the lightest and brightest homes will benefit from using black within the design. So today I want to talk about 5 simple and creative ways to incorporate black in interior design to help ground your space and provide dimension in a room.

Black In Design Tip 1: Think Outside the Decor
Do you know what I love about my kitchen? The black sink. Number 1: It visually pops out of these granite countertops. With a light and bright kitchen I wanted something that would not blend into my white cabinetry so I chose this black sink as a design element rather than opting for a standard white sink. Number 2: On a more practical note, it masks dings and scratches from everyday use. If I had my choice, I would never go back to a white sink again!
Black In Design Tip 2: Make a Statement

My sweet friend, Cynthia, knows how to use black. She may just be deemed the expert. In her gorgeous bedroom she’s chosen to make a bold statement with a black accent wall. This dark backdrop is the perfect way to highlight the rest of her light and bright decor. Here, she uses black in interior design as a focal point for the room which easily draws your attention to the details of her coordinating bedding and home decor.
Black In Design Tip 3: Be Playful

Now this is a playroom that both mom and child can enjoy! Erin used pops of black to make this space playful while remaining polished. The best way to use black in small doses is to ensure that you’ve included a few pops within a room to tie it together. Here, you can see that Erin has made the rug and the PLAY letters the focal point, but chose to incorporate black in interior design throughout the room to tie it together with the wall bins, sconces and crayon box.
Black In Interior Design Tip 4: Doors & Windows

One of my must have design elements are black (or charcoal) doors. Black paint can take a plain jane door and make it pop, especially when surrounded by white trim. When black is used on the windows, it also draws the eye to the outside making your space feel more expansive. I love how Jessica used black paint to draw attention to her beautiful french doors. Doing this allows doors to become a focal point of your home so that you can use less decoration on the walls surrounding them.
Black In Interior Design Tip 5: Break Up a Monochromatic Color Palette

One of the most popular design trends currently is the monochromatic color palette. A white and bright interior, playing off of Scandinavian design trends, can be seen all over Pinterest and in design magazines. Personally, I need more interest in my home decor than pure white, so incorporating black in interior design is an easy way to break up an otherwise neutral color palette.
If you’ve never seen Morgan’s beautiful home I’d encourage you to go say hello! I love how she used this statement chair to ground an otherwise neutral space. Going bold with black keeps this beautiful space interesting and helps the surrounding simplistic decor stand out as well.
Your Turn!
Now that you have 5 easy ways to add black in interior design, what ideas do you have? Will you think beyond decor and consider black appliances, countertops, sinks, or hardware? Will you make a statement or keep it more subtle and playful? I’d love to hear how you might start to incorporate black in your interior design plans. Leave me a comment below!
