Modern Farmhouse Outdoor Lighting | Easy Home Exterior Updates
Hello my friends, and welcome to outdoor weather! I couldn’t be more excited to enjoy the upcoming Michigan summer, so it’s no surprise that I have been working on sprucing up the outdoors! Today I am sharing with you one of the easiest ways to update your home exterior using modern farmhouse outdoor lighting.

Modern Farmhouse Outdoor Lighting | Easy Exterior Updates
As you can see from the Before photo, our 90’s ranch had lots of potential when we first moved in, but lacked that pizzazz I was looking for. Besides the dingy brick and vine overgrowth, the outdated brass fixtures lowered the appeal of the front elevation.
These outdated brass fixtures circled the house and could be found encasing both the sunroom doors, back deck sliders and lower patio sliders. It was outdated brass overload and evident that the outdoor lighting hadn’t been updated in quite some time.

Thanks to Lamps Plus, as well as my ever-so-talented husband, our home was ushered into the 21st century with modern farmhouse outdoor lighting. These sleek, classic, and unique fixtures updated our home exterior immediately!
Front Elevation Lighting Update
As you can see, our front elevation needed a small makeover in addition to our gorgeous new outdoor lighting. So I simply cut back the vine overgrowth before my husband power washed the brick. Then I added simple magnetic garage door accents to give the appearance of carriage doors.
These very small and inexpensive changes were just what I needed to be able to highlight our new modern farmhouse outdoor lighting. This beautiful light is able to shine with the black washed off the brick and the vines trimmed below the outdoor light! Below you can see the difference the lighting makes with the updated light on the right in contrast to the outdated light on the left.

Modern Farmhouse Outdoor Lighting | Back Elevation
Doesn’t this simple update make such a huge difference?! Once my husband hung these first two lights I couldn’t wait for him to move on to the other five lights around the back of the house. Now, let me just pause and say that major props go to my hubby on this project. I may have trimmed the vines (small potatoes) but he installed all seven of these outdoor lights for me without uttering a complaint! That’s a good man right there. 😉
Sunroom
Flanking the sunroom sliders we installed these beautiful lights with seeded glass. I loved them so much that I decided to use them on the back patio as well. You can see how much more dramatic this space becomes with updated lighting that is larger in size. The previous brass lights were much smaller and didn’t fit the space.
Back Deck
On the back deck I decided to go with a sleek design that leans more toward modern than farmhouse but still has that updated barn light look. Upgrading this light with a globe that hangs below the backplate allowed us to increase the lighting size as well so that it was more substantial and impactful.
Back Patio
On the back patio we used the same seeded glass light fixtures as we used to flank the sunroom doors. This modern farmhouse outdoor lighting was the perfect inspiration to kick off my back patio makeover, which I will share next! I love it when it is possible to completely change the look of a home exterior with one simple update. Or in this case, seven. Lighting is an important element in interior design, however, it is often overlooked on the exterior. So if you are looking for an easy way to update your home exterior without doing major updates, consider updating your outdoor lighting.
