Cinnamon Apple Crisp Recipe
Is there anything better than apple recipes in the fall? (Or year round, for that matter.)
A sweet Honeycrisp apple is the perfect apple for this cinnamon apple crisp. It is perfectly sweet, crisp without the crunch, and keeps its shape when baking.
Pair it with a homemade crumble topping and you have the most savory, sweet, buttery, mouth-watering combination.
Cinnamon Apple Crisp Ingredients
Fruit Filling
- 7 c. peeled and sliced Honeycrisp apples (7-8 medium)
- 3 Tbs. cornstarch
- 1/4 c. brown sugar
- 1/4 c. granulated sugar
- 1 tsp. vanilla
- 1 tsp. cinnamon
Crumble Topping
- 1 c. Old Fashioned Rolled Oats
- 1/2 c. quick oats
- 3/4 c. brown sugar
- 3/4 c. salted butter, softened and cubed
- 1/3 c. + 2 Tbs. flour
- dash of fine sea salt
- 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
Recipe Instructions
Preheat oven to 350 F (180 C).
Mix all of the ingredients for the fruit filling in a large mixing bowl with a spoon.
Coat the fruit evenly with the rest of the ingredients and dump into a 9×13 baking dish.
Next, soften (but don’t melt) your butter if you haven’t already, and then mix the remaining topping ingredients in a large mixing bowl.
Stir the topping ingredients until they are combined well and then dollop them onto the fruit filling.
Evenly spread the topping across the entire dish.
Bake, uncovered, for 50-60 minutes or until fruit juices are bubbling and the crumble is lightly browned.
Let cool at least 30 minutes before serving.
Store leftovers covered tightly in the refrigerator up to 3 days.

Notes
- I do not prepare my baking dish with cooking spray or flour but you can do so if you desire!
- Oats: You can use 1 1/2 c. of either oat if you only have one! I just mix them to get the thickness of the topping I prefer.
- Flour: To make it easy, just do 1/3 c. flour and then use the same measuring cup and only fill it halfway for the 2 tbs addition.
- Feel free to omit the nutmeg if you don’t have a taste for this spice, but I enjoy it with the cinnamon.
- Serve alone or with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.
- Drizzle with caramel for added sweetness.

Serving Suggestions
Serve alone, warm. If you have any left overs, warm them for 20 seconds in the microwave for a taste like it is right out of the oven.
You can also serve with vanilla ice cream and whipped cream.
Drizzle with caramel for added sweetness. Top with caramel and flaky sea salt for a salted caramel crisp!
What Are the Best Apples for Apple Crisp?
The best apples for apple crisp are slightly tart and will not become mushy.
I recommend:
- Jonathan
- Braeburn
- Granny Smith
- Honeycrisp
- Cortland
And I would avoid:
- Red delicious
- Gala
- Fuji
How Thick Should I Slice Apples for Apple Crisp?
Slice your apples to about 1/4″ thick. This allows them to soften easily in the cooking timeframe without becoming mushy.
Any thicker, and you will end up with slightly crunchy apples.
