Best Washable Area Rugs for Real Life: Honest LaHome Rug Review
As a mom of two teens (and their friends) and owner of two dogs and a cat, I needed to find the best washable area rugs for our home. Soccer cleats leave chunks of mud across the entry. Large and tiny dog paws track mud and grass clippings in. And cat messes are quite common, though I wish they weren’t.
On top of that, we live in a snow and mud covered climate for 8 months of the year. So I set out to outfit our home with washable area rugs that I can actually wash with ease. Here’s my honest review of LaHome washable area rugs and how I’ve used them in the messiest areas of my home.

Why Choose a Washable Rug?
Washable rugs have become popular in the last 10 years with the launch of several washable rug companies. However, in the past, the selection was limited.
Now, we have options. And the best motivator for rug companies to improve their product is competition. What was once a novelty is now a standard we should hold.
Benefits for Families, Pets and High Traffic Areas
In the past, spot cleaning or professional rug cleaners were our only option.
But with washable area rugs, pet messes and debris from families can easily be washed away. I particularly love that LaHome area rugs can be revitalized with a full wash.

Whereas spot cleaning can leave a rug looking splotchy, machine washed LaHome rugs brings the entire rug back to life.
How Washable Rugs Simplify Home Care
We wash sheets, couch cushion covers, and linens on a frequent basis. Why wouldn’t we also wash area rugs that see heavy foot traffic, spilled food, and pet messes?
These floor coverings are arguably the dirtiest textiles in our homes. I love that I can easily clean and sanitize even large LaHome area rugs in a single wash, just as easily as washing a load of towels.
About LaHome Washable Rugs
LaHome washable rugs offer the standard of fitting nicely into a home washing machine. However, they have some additional features I particularly enjoy.
Key Features of LaHome Rugs
My two favorite features of LaHome rugs is the cloud soft comfort and no-liner necessary design.

All of the other washable area rugs I’ve used in the past were thin without any softness. Additionally, they all required a velcro pad that was difficult to remove for washing.
LaHome area rugs, on the other hand, are soft underfoot and lay flat without a pad needed. They will still work with a carpet pad if extra thickness is desired, but it isn’t required.
My Experience with LaHome Rugs
Design Options & First Impressions
First, the variety of styles and designs to choose from is expansive. They offer everything from Bohemian to Traditional design styles.

Or, you can easily shop by category, like outdoor, kids, floral, geometric or by size or color. This allowed me to quickly narrow down my search as I was looking for vintage style rugs.
When the rugs arrived, I was surprised that they came folded in an easy to carry package. All of the other washable rugs I’ve received in the mail came in bulky boxes and required help to bring in.

I simply unfolded each rug and laid it flat to let it come to shape.
Often, rugs put off unpleasant odors when they arrive. However, my LaHome rugs had more of a “new car” smell that wasn’t overpowering.
Washing & Care Process
Within a week of placing my new LaHome kitchen runner, our 3 month old puppy soiled it. This was my first test of its washing capabilities.
First I removed the mess. Then, did a light vacuuming everywhere except the soiled area to get off excess dirt. Then I just tossed it into the washing machine on delicate to remove the stain with my favorite mild detergent.

It came out perfectly clean with no spotty messes. I laid it flat to dry and that was all it took.
Since then she’s decided this is her potty rug and it has been washed many times in a short period of time. Until we get her fully trained, I’m so grateful I can toss it in the wash! It comes out looking new every time.
On a daily basis, I simply vacuum on my lowest suction setting to avoid bunching the rug.
Pros & Cons of LaHome Washable Rugs
What I Love Most
As I said before, my favorite feature is the cloud soft texture. It is still low-pile for easy cleaning and vacuuming, but is soft underfoot. It’s very luxurious.

The construction is well made with great binding along the edges. And they are OEKO-TEX certified non-toxic, which is huge in today’s industry.
Additionally, the price point is much more affordable than similar washable rug brands.
Dealing With Creases and Sliding Issues
I love that a second velcro rug isn’t required. When I used them in the past they were always so difficult to line up, smooth flat, and they caused the corners to curl.
With LaHome, the rugs lay flat right out of the package with minimal effort. While it is recommended to reverse roll the rug, I simply tossed it into the dryer for 10 minutes on no heat refresh. It took all the creases from shipping right out and laid flat without any extra effort.

The rugs also come with a non-slip backing. All of my other washable and non-washable rugs have required sticky carpet corners or rubber backed pads to keep them in place.
However, my LaHome rugs aren’t budging and I haven’t added anything extra to keep them in place. Even my large dogs running haven’t made them slide.
Areas for Improvement
There are hundreds of beautiful designs. It was so hard for me to choose.
However, the main area for improvement would be to add more long runner sizes. 2.5×10 or 2.5×12 were less available in the designs I loved. I’d love to see more of the beautiful designs in these longer sizes.

I was, however, pleasantly surprised at the large number of 9×12 and 10×14 rugs! These oversized rugs are typically hard to find in a washable rug. However, LaHome offers a large variety of styles in these sizes.
Would I Buy Again?
I would, and will, buy LaHome washable area rugs again!
I already have two areas in our back entry and mudroom that I need a rug that is built to collect debris from being tracked through the house. For these spaces, I’ve been eyeing the Coline Washable Geometric Checkered Easy Jute Black Indoor/Outdoor Rug and Noe Washable Neutral Farmhouse Kitchen Grey Rug & Runner.
I think these two would pair perfectly together and add some extra toughness to a highly trafficked space.
Tips for Choosing the Right Rug for Your Space
Proper rug sizing is important. Not only for functionality, but also for appearance.

Too small of a rug and your space feels awkward. Too large of a rug and the space appears sloppy.
Here are my recommendations.
Sizing Tips By Room
Each room in a home has its own set of rules. This is my easy to understand recommendation.
Kitchen
Runners are most commonly found in a kitchen. Typically in front of a sink or between an island and perimeter cabinets. If you have a small kitchen, I would recommend a 2×6 in front of the sink.
For kitchens with islands, a runner placed parallel that is at least the length of your island is preferred. I wouldn’t go much beyond the length of the island or it will look sloppy.
Bedroom
Typically, bed size and placement of the rug are the two key factors in determining rug size.
If you are placing the rug under your bed, then a 9×12 or 8×10 works best with a king size. An 8×10 for a queen or full. And a 5×8 or 6×9 for a twin bed. Alternatively, you can place two smaller rugs on either side of the bed.
If you are placing the rug centrally in a large room, then I like to keep the rug to at least 2/3 the width of the room for great coverage.
Living Room
Furniture placement is most important for living room area rugs. I prefer to think of rugs in a large room as zone creators. One area rug creates a zone for different purposes (conversation sets, game tables, media furniture…etc.) See more about designing living room furniture placement here.
The main thing to keep in mind is that your rug should be large enough to hold all the furniture for your zone with at least the front two legs on the rug. If your sofas can’t fit all four legs on the rug, that’s ok. Just get those front two on for proper sizing.
In our 16×24 living room, we have a 10×14 area rug and it works perfectly for our seating arrangement.
Dining Room
Most 6 person dining tables work best with an 8×10 or 9×12 area rug.
I prefer for all the chairs to fit easily on the rug, even when they are pulled out. That way you aren’t constantly catching a chair leg on the rug to push it back it. Our dining room above shows how an 8×10 rug fits.
Plus, the area rug adds extra coverage to protect your floors from sliding chair damage.
