Modern farmhouse design truly took off when Joanna Gaines amplified it across her spheres of influence. It is for those who love simple, clean lines but also want to feel comfortable and cozy. The Anchors | Mix Your Furniture

Let’s start with the largest pieces as your focal point in the living room: furniture. These are the anchor pieces for the entire space and should be a combination of modern and farmhouse. I love the comfy cottage feeling from my basic Ikea couch. In contrast, these beautiful arm chairs modernize the space with their clean lines and sleek wood arms.

Additionally, I have incorporated a large coffee table that pulls more towards farmhouse; however, I refinished it with a wood top to keep those modern wood tones in play. You can see what this table looked like before, and how I refinished it, in this post.

The Accents | Texture, Texture, Texture

Next, let’s talk accents. Home decor staples for farmhouse style include textured pillows, throws and baskets. My favorite pillows can be found here.

These simple accents add the cozy element that the farmhouse style is known for. In contrast, make sure to mix in modern pieces that still add texture.

I’ve added a modern lamp and a modern gold mirror to my living area as simple modern accents.

Additionally, these vases are timeless and modernize my otherwise cozy space. Very simple and carefully chosen accents like these are important details if you want to keep your modern farmhouse living room clean and clutter free. You only need one or two additions of modern accents to add enough contrast.

The Design | Think In Layers

Layer your pillows, layer your textures, layer your wall hangings, layer your mirrors. You get the point! It is these layers that help add interest and keep your space cozy without feeling cluttered.
