How to Layer Rugs without Bunching

Love it? Share it!

Hi My Friends! I wanted to share a super easy way to layer rugs today!

Have you ever struggled to keep your layered rugs flat? I've found an easy way to layer rugs without dealing with bunching, sliding or puckering!

A few weeks ago I purchased a new rug to layer on top of my existing rug. I originally had a white 10×15 rug that I wanted to spice up a bit, but I didn’t want to spend the money to buy a whole new 10×15 rug because….it hurts my pocketbook. 😉 So my solution was to buy an 8×10 rug and layer it on top. This adds interest, coziness (read all about that in my post on Hygge!), and changes up my space to a more vintage-y look. Doesn’t everyone want to layer rugs these days?!

However, do you know what I didn’t plan on? My rug bunching up every time someone walked on it. Talk about an easy way to drive Sarah crazy. I spent the better part of my day stopping to position my layered rugs into place because the top rug bunched up drastically. Even placing heavy furniture on top of it didn’t hold it in place.

So, I went to the web to find a solution. And you know what? There weren’t a lot of options! I was honestly surprised because I thought that this would be a common problem since layered rugs are popular right now. I did, luckily, find the product I’m going to share with you today!

Magic Stop Rug Pad

We all know that rug pads should be used to avoid slipping when a rug is layered on top of wood or tile floors. But did you know that they make a rug pad specifically for rugs layered on top of carpet or other rugs? Neither did I! (Well….maybe you did and I’m just behind the times. Either way, I was excited to find this product. 😉 )

I was slightly skeptical that this would work, to be honest. However, after installing it and living with it with 10 people (+ a dog) the rugs haven’t shifted an inch!  Here are some tips on installing this rug pad for best results.

Installation Tips

  1. Lay your bottom layer rug in its desired location.
  2. Mark off the corners where you want your top layer rug to be situated with painters tape.
  3. Roll out the rug pad and position it inside the taped off area.
  4. Slowly peel back the bottom plastic coating off of the rug pad. As you do this, position the rug pad in place between the taped areas so that it sticks in the proper location. {Keep the top layer of plastic coating on the rug pad until the entire rug pad has been positioned.}
  5. Smooth down the rug pad and get all of the air bubbles out. Trim off any excess rug pad that lays outside of your marked off lines.
  6. Now you can take off the top plastic coating from the rug pad to reveal the sticky side of the pad.
  7. Carefully (with two people preferably!) place your top layer rug that has been rolled up on top of the rug pad inside the marked corners on one end.
  8. Slowly unroll the top layer rug, adjusting as needed, on top of the rug pad. Make sure to move it if needed to be in the desired location.
  9. Once the top layer rug is in place, slowly and firmly press down across the entire top layer rug smoothing out any air bubbles.

And voila! You have layered rugs that won’t budge, bunch, or curl. I’ve had my Magic Stop Rug Pad for almost two months and haven’t had any issues. Better yet, this rug pad has a 10 year warranty! Win win for all of us who love to layer rugs. 😉

Now that I know there is an easy solution, I may just need to layer a few more rugs. What’s your favorite type of rug look these days? Have a great day friends!
