Homemade Pear Sauce Recipe
This sweet pear sauce is a great option if you have pears that never seem to ripen. Of course, you can also use overripe pears, which will be extra sweet.
If you are like me and have an abundance of small pears on a tree that doesn’t produce large fruit, make sure to check out this post on what to do with unripe pears for some delicious additional recipes.
Pear Sauce Ingredients
- 24-32 very small pears or 8 large pears (see notes)
- 1 cup water
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 5 whole cloves
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 Tbs lemon juice
- 1 tsp nutmeg
- 1 tsp vanilla
- 1 tsp honey
- 1/2 c. white sugar
How to Make Homemade Pear Sauce
First, wash and peel your pears. Then, slice the pear flesh off the core on all four sides.
Alternatively, you can leave the skin on as that is where the majority of the nutrients lie.
Leaving the skin on can sometimes result in a bitter aftertaste. If you find that’s a problem, add in a few more tablespoons of brown sugar. Leaving the skin will also result in a chunkier pear sauce.
Next, combine all ingredients, except the sliced pears, in a pot. Bring the water mixture to a boil and then simmer, stirring to dissolve the sugar.
Add the pears and simmer underripe pears for 35-40 minutes, or until pears are soft when tested with a fork. (Note: If your pears are already ripe, you can shorten the cook time to 20-25 minutes.)
If you are cooking with unripe pears, you may have excess water once your pears have softened. If that’s the case, simply drain the excess. Otherwise, you should be left with a delicious pear syrup!
Finally, use an immersion blender to puree the pears into pear sauce. Cool completely and store in tightened mason jars in the refrigerator.

Notes
Pear size impacts serving sizes. 24-32 small pears is most applicable for homeowners with ill-pruned trees which produce small fruit. 8 large pears is applicable for most store bought large pears.
I prefer Bosc pears. However, Bartlett and Anjou are great too.
Freezeable in 8 oz freezer containers up to 3 months.
