As is typically how I create my recipes, this one was born out of lack of ingredients. If you missed it, I’d call my salted pretzel sweet potato pie recipe my greatest baking achievement and it all came out of lack of ingredients.

This time around, I wanted a classic banana bread loaf to make as care packages to gift to family members for Easter alongside my simple free printables.

Ironically, I prefer my banana bread not to be overly banana-y. This banana bread with applesauce is a dense bread but SO moist! It bakes evenly and doesn’t leave the top or middle soggy, like so many other recipes I’ve tried.

Banana Bread Ingredients

First, preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and lightly grease and flour a 9×5 metal loaf pan.

Then, combine your butter and brown sugar by creaming them with an electric beater.

In a separate small bowl, hand beat your eggs and add them to the creamed mixture.

Then, mash your bananas well and add applesauce.

If you do not have applesauce on hand, you can also substitute for a total of 2 1/3 c. mashed bananas. However, the applesauce is really the key ingredient to making a dense but MOIST banana bread!

Once you’ve mixed all your wet ingredients together, combine them with the dry ingredients. Hand stir gently and only until moistened. Over stirring will result in tough bread!

Once you’ve combined all ingredients, pour your batter into your prepared loaf pan. Bake on center rack at 350 for 60-65 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean or slightly damp.

After 30 minutes, check to ensure your loaf top isn’t over browning. If it is, loosely top with a thin layer of tin foil to prevent burning.

Remove from the oven when fully cooked and let cool for 10 minutes before removing your banana bread from a pan and relocating it to a wire rack.

How to Serve, Store or Freeze

I’ve made my fair share of banana breads that never seem to cook properly. Either the top is pure dough and the bottom is burnt or it sinks after removing from the oven. This banana bread with applesauce is moist, yet dense, for a perfectly sliceable banana bread!

Store wrapped tightly on the countertop for 3-5 days. This banana bread also freezes extremely well.

Simply wrap completely cooled bread in plastic wrap, place into a freezer bag, and freeze in whole loaves. Thaw on the countertop at least 4-5 hours before you’re ready to eat it.
