What’s Your Platform and What Will You Do With It?

Love it? Share it!

Happy Monday friends! Today’s Monday Musings of Grace is going to involve a little self-reflection, so get ready. I’ve been musing about platforms….and no, not the kind you wish hadn’t come back from the 70s. 😉

If you don’t know the history of my Monday Musings, I started them on Instagram earlier this year as a way to express the more serious side of me to my followers. My Instagram philosophy (if one has that kind of thing) is to remain positive, make people laugh, and be an encouragement. Along with those goals, I wanted to glorify God, first and foremost, and I found that the best way to do that was to consolidate my thoughts into a weekly post where I could share what was on my heart.

Let’s Get To It

So today, I was chatting with a dear friend and she said to me, “My sister was talking to me and she said, ‘Did you know Sarah is Instagram-famous?!'” Um. Hold your horses. Famous? No. More followers than the average SAHM? Maybe. But in reality, I’m just a pip-squeak of an account compared to sooooo many.

However, it got me thinking and when I get to thinking it usually spills out to a Monday Musing. So here we are! I hope that my musing can help you reflect on this topic in your own life. And that topic is:

What Do You Do With the Platform God has Given You?

Two years ago I was a new SAHM (“stay at home mom” for all you who don’t know the jargon) after having an 8 year marketing career. I started using Instagram as a way to have some “me” time and I soon discovered the home decor community. And you know what I needed as a new SAHM? A COMMUNITY! Oh boy, my sweet mommas out there, you are not alone! But that is a topic for another musing. 😉

Since I got sucked into having fun with these beautiful people I was meeting through Instagram I decided to start posting my own home decor. And through a lot of hard work (Yes, it was hard WORK. But still fun!) and by the grace of God, He has allowed me to have a platform that I never thought I’d experience.

My Platform

I currently sit at 22,000 followers on Instagram. I say that with the utmost humility because that is honestly just a number. I could have 220 or 22 million followers and I would still be humbled that anyone would follow along on my life journey. And I’m blown away that God has seen fit to move me in the direction of this blog where I can share my heart with all of you beautiful people.

But somewhere along the way I realized that I have an influence on a small city every day on Instagram, and my goals changed. My feed became less about what vignette I created and more about how I could encourage that single mother who needs one solitary moment to look at a pretty picture and smile over a funny caption. It became about glorifying God through my hardest times to help others see that HE IS GOOD.

And yes. Yes I do love decorating my home and showing you how to do DIY projects. That won’t go away because it is a part of me and God has given me a passion for those things. Yet my mindset changed and now I run my posts and my captions through a filter first. Does this glorify God? Will this lift someone’s spirit? Can I provide value to these people with what I show or say?

Your Platform

So now it’s your turn. I don’t know what your platform is. In fact, you may not even know what your platform is yet. Rest assured, everyone has one. Maybe your platform is with three kiddos under the age of three (bless you girl). Perhaps your platform is thousands of employees. Maybe your platform is one teenager you’ve chosen to invest in and mentor. Is it your husband or wife? Could it be your church? Possibly, it is the man on the street corner who you gave $20 to and prayed over.

Whatever it is, find it out. Dwell on it. It doesn’t have to be big or fancy or seem important to others, but God gives us all a sphere of influence to be used for His glory and our good. And honestly, once you find your platform I hope it challenges you and pushes you deeper into Him. I hope it makes you question your motives and forces you to filter your actions through the question: What am I doing with the platform God has given me?

Homework

Did you know you were going to have homework as a reader of my blog? No? I didn’t either. 😉 But this seems like an appropriate course of action. I hope that you will take some time to dwell on this. Figure out what your platform is by determining who is in your sphere of influence and how you use that platform.

Personally, I am a Believer and want my platform to bring people closer to God and to bring them encouragement in life. It might sound silly, but sometimes I feel like I’m just doing life with ya’ll. All 22,000 of ya.

But I love doing life with you and I’d love to continue the conversation! Talk with me! Leave me a comment or send me a message and let me know what you’ve decided. What’s your platform and what are you going to do with it?

Be blessed,

Sarah Signature
