The History of Smoothies
In ancient civilizations, the concept of smoothies was basically born.
Evidence of fruit pulps being mixed with water show that people back then also craved refreshing drinks. However, the concept of smoothies as we know them today, began to emerge in the 1930s. It was then that health food stores started blending fruit, ice and milk to create thicker, more substantial drinks.
In the 1960s and 1970s, smoothies gained popularity as a healthy alternative to traditional sugary beverages. With access to home blenders, it became easy for people to make their own smoothies at home.
Today, smoothies are available almost anywhere and everywhere, and continue to grow in popularity as people look for more convenient ways to enjoy their favorite fruits and green vegetables.
Fun Facts About Passion Fruit
Passion fruit is a small, round fruit that is native to South America. Known for its sweet and tart flavor, passion fruit is often used in juices, smoothies, and desserts. Here are some fun facts about passion fruit:
- Passion fruit is a good source of antioxidants and vitamin C, which can help protect your body from damage caused by free radicals.
- The passion fruit’s name comes from the Spanish word “pasionaria,” which means “passionflower.” This name is a reference to the intricate, flower-like patterns that are visible on the fruit’s skin.
- Passion fruit is a rich source of fiber, which can help regulate digestion and keep you feeling full for longer.
While I used frozen passion fruit chunks in this green passion smoothie, you could certainly use fresh passion fruit as well!
How to Cut a Fresh Passion Fruit
To cut a passion fruit, use a sharp knife to cut the fruit in half, lengthwise. But be careful with this step, as passion fruits can have a very tough outer layer that can be challenging to cut through.
Next, use a spoon to scoop out the pulp and seeds from the center of each half. To remove any excess fibers or seeds, strain the pulp through a fine-mesh sieve.
Then, the pulp and juice is ready to use in various recipes, such as this green passion fruit smoothie.
Green Mango: A Nutritious Fruit
A popular fruit known for sweet and juicy flesh, is the mango. Mangos are native to Southeast Asia, but now they are grown in various tropical regions. Want to know some fun facts about mangos?
- Mangos are rich in vitamin C, which can help boost your immune system and protect your body from damage caused by free radicals.
- Mangos are a good source of potassium, which can help regulate blood pressure and support heart health.
- Green mangos specifically are rich in fiber and low in sugar, making them a great option for people who are looking for a healthy and nutritious snack.
Simply put, a green mango is simply a mango that isn’t fully ripe yet. This offers a more tart and tangy flavor.
For this green passion smoothie recipe, I used frozen ripe mango. I prefer the added sweetness ripe mangos provide. But feel free to try using a freshly skinned and diced green mango for that extra vitamin C and fiber!
panera Green Passion Smoothie Copycat
Personally, I’d rather make my own smoothies at home than buy them at a restaurant. So if you love the Panera green passion smoothie, consider this recipe your new best friend.
While I don’t have the proprietary Panera green passion smoothie ingredients, this is an amazing copycat to make at home.
You can try adding in some peach or white grape juice if you want a sweeter blend.
How To Make a Green Passion Smoothie
Making a green passion fruit smoothie is easy and requires just a few simple ingredients.
There are a few options for blenders, depending on if you are making a personal size or enough for the family. These are my favorites.
- Personal Size Blender: I love that this one can be used by my young kids on their own and taken as a grab n go!
- Larger Blender: This one comes with two size jars, perfect for blending smoothies or processing other foods to do double duty.
Green Passion Smoothie Ingredients
- ½ Cup frozen mango pieces (or sub for fresh, skinned and diced)
- ½ Cup frozen passion fruit pieces (or sub for fresh, skinned and diced)
- ½ Cup packed baby spinach
- ¾ Cup oat milk (or almond, or other preferred substitute)
- ½ Tbsp honey or any sweetener of your choice
- 2 Tbsp vanilla flavored yogurt (any milk choice and brand)
- 1 scoop (according to label) of unflavored collagen (optional)
Directions
Simply add all of the ingredients to a blender and blend until smooth. If the smoothie is too thick, add a little more milk to achieve the desired consistency. Pour the smoothie into a glass and enjoy!
Tip For Preparing With Fresh Fruit
If using fresh mango and passion fruit instead of frozen, you will need to add ice. Ice will be needed to create that thick smoothie texture. Try decreasing the milk measurement to 1/4 cup and add 4-5 ice cubes, then play with the consistency from there.

The Best Way To Take Collagen
I like to add a scoop of collagen to my smoothies.
Research suggests that collagen has numerous health benefits, such as improving skin elasticity, reducing joint pain, and promoting muscle growth.
Collagen supplementation improves your skin health by increasing skin hydration and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Additionally, collagen helps promote muscle growth and strength. This can aid in maintaining a healthy weight and reduce the risk of chronic diseases.
Therefore, if you can incorporate a collagen supplement into your diet by blending it into your favorite smoothie, why wouldn’t you?
Adding supplements to smoothies is a great option for whatever you’d normally include in your regimen. I’d also recommend DIME’s TBT supplement to help with anti-aging. You can use code symonds20 for 20% off your DIME order anytime.
