Cozy Living Room Ideas for Hygge Enthusiasts

Once Christmas has passed and winter is upon us I dive deep into cozy living room ideas to warm up my family. Michigan winters are long and tedious so creating a welcoming and cozy living space is a goal of mine. Here are a few simple tips for creating a hygge home with intentional coziness. (You can see more about the hygge movement here.)

Pillows & Blankets

What would winter be without a plethora of pillows and blankets? Some may say that throw pillows are impractical and just for looks. I’d say….come join me at my home for a day. 😉 Not only do we fully use our throw pillows for comfort, they also make a mean weapon for the occasional pillow fight.

One of the easiest ways to purchase pillows that are extra cozy is to look for soft and rich textures, oversized shapes, and high pile fabric.

Velvets, linen and cotton are the best cozy fabrics. Considering the sensory feeling of touch can be an intentional way to incorporate cozy living room ideas.

Favorite Cozy Pillows

I also love blankets for their obvious function and also stylish addition to a living room. I am often asked for a blanket from guests because of our large, and sometimes drafty, house. Being able to provide that comfort to them with something that is beautiful helps meet my goal of having an inviting home.

Soft Rugs

With carpet becoming the less-often chosen flooring source, area rugs are a great way to add cozy to your living space. Choose a rug with a soft pile for comfort and a wool blend for easy clean up. Our living room rug has been my favorite for quite a few years now and has held up remarkably well for its light coloring!

I stick to neutral rugs often because they can complement the rest of my decor easily. However, area rugs can easily be an amazing way to add life and color to a space that isn’t a permanent addition like paint colors or large furniture.

Greenery

Another way to add cozy living room ideas is to incorporate greenery. Whether you are a plant lover or choose to go faux, greenery is soothing because of its natural textures and colors.

If you’re looking for some easy care plants, I’ve rounded up my favorites here for those who want to incorporate live plants indoors. If you’re more of a faux lover, my favorite faux foliage and florals are rounded up here.

Soft Lighting

The final way to incorporate cozy living room ideas is to add soft lighting. This can be through lamps, candles, dimmer switches, or shades. Casting that soft glow has a calming effect on even the bitterest cold days of winter.

I hope these tips on cozy living room ideas have been helpful to you as you endure these long winter months! Spring is just around the corner my friends. Hang tight, the sun will reappear soon. 😉

  2. Hi Sarah! This is lovely!

Your living room rug link no longer works, is there any way you could give the rug label info? I love it so much!

  3. Sarah,
Loved your blog today. Thanks for sharing all the info on where to find plants, pots, topiaries, etc. I know you will be glad when spring gets here since ya’ll have had a lot of winter weather. It’s been mild (for me) here in SC this year. I love the cold weather better than HOT South !!! Thanks for caring so much for your blog friends and sharing all your talents and showing us how to decorate using simple ideas. Love your post!!!

    1. I’m so glad you enjoyed it Jean! Thank you for stopping by the blog. It means so much to hear feedback that it was helpful! And yes, the spring months can’t come soon enough!

  4. You have definitely created a very cozy and inviting living room. We happened to be visiting family in Northern Indiana (less than a mile from Michigan line) for the Polar Vortex and can appreciate the need for cozy pillows and throws/blankets. In Louisiana we don’t have the same weather but cozy belongs anywhere this time of year.

  5. Sarah,
I adore the vignette atop the cabinet behind the two chairs in your living Room!
I have a Primitive Cabinet in my Family Room (very similar) and am always looking for inspiring ideas.
Thank you for sharing your lovely home!

  6. I just love cozy spaces. I’m always adding something to help us in our efforts towards coziness. I do have a question for you regarding rugs. What is the rule regarding size and placement? We have a long living room, so we sectioned off part for our couch and recliner. We have a jute rug, but it is not very comfortable on the feet? What do you recommend? I notice some people put a rug under their dining room tables, but I have small children; so I’m not quite sure about that. Any recommendations? Thanks! All your spaces look amazing and inviting!

    1. For rugs I tend to use them to zone a space. So for my living room, the rug needs to be large enough for all of my furniture (or at least the front legs of each piece) to fit on top of the rug. For the dining room, I’d only recommend a rug if your kids are a bit older and more responsible. And even then, make it a patterned rug to hide spills. 😉

      1. Zoning! Perfect! I think our rug is a little small then. I need to either move it, or scoot our furniture a little closer! That would definitely add to the cozy factor! Thanks also for confirming my no rug under my dining table!
