Simple Summer Mantel Ideas
This past spring, I created a simplified version of my normal spring mantel by turning it into a propagation station. I truly loved the simplicity of that spring mantel and knew I didn’t want to complicate my summer mantel decor.
I kept my two favorite indoor pots as the main mantel decor, very similarly to my spring mantel. Then, I added this DIY abstract wall art!
I put together a full tutorial on the blog for how I created this piece for ZERO dollars! Woot! That’s my favorite price.
I really wanted the main focal point to be simple, neutral, textured, and modern. That allows the plants to steal the show while keeping the mantel interesting.
Creating Flow In An Open Concept
I love how the simplicity of this mantel decor flows so well with the rest of the house. Our fireplace is a double-sided fireplace that is open to the entire main living area.
This can cause some mantel ideas to be too difficult to flow into the rest of the house. So, I’m always looking for ways to keep the entire space cohesive.
No matter which direction you are viewing the mantel from, it blends into the different room’s around it because of its simplicity and neutral color scheme.
It connects to the living room, kitchen and dining room, depending on where you are standing in the house. I think this simplified summer mantel is the perfect compromise between interesting and overkill.
Simple Mantel Details
Since my summer mantel ideas are so simple, they don’t take much explanation. However, I wanted to give some quick tips for making your summer mantel come together perfectly.
1 | Establish a Focal Point
I’ve chosen my DIY abstract art as my main focal point. Typically, this is your largest piece and works well centered on your fireplace. When hanging artwork or a mirror above a fireplace, make sure that you don’t hang it too high or too low. Placement makes a big impact in pulling the entire mantel together.
2 | Add an Anchor
Adding an anchor point is very simple, yet makes a big impact on your mantel decor. This should be something that is substantial enough to be noticed immediately, like my planters.
Both of these planters are large, and when grouped together they create an anchor point for your eye to be drawn to.
3 | Fill In Gaps
The last step to a simplified mantel is to fill in the gaps. I like to use iron candle sticks because they help ground the space by adding black, but they are not bulky. They also add some height to the mantel.
It really is that easy!
Three steps to an effortless mantel:
- Choose a focal point
- Add an anchor
- Fill in the gaps
