Autumn Coffee Table Decor Style Basics
Decorating a coffee table for fall can be done so many ways.
Personally, I feel it has more to do with your stage of life than your design style.
Little kids still in the house? Your coffee table decor might look more like a lego storage table than a styled space. And that’s ok! More than anything, I love to share ideas that are doable no matter what stage of life you’re in.
On the other end of the spectrum, you may prefer to have a polished space that is simply for decorating enjoyment. Either way, these autumn coffee table decor ideas will spur your creativity to create a space that works for you.
What Decor Goes on a Coffee Table for Fall?
While there are many ways to decorate a coffee table for fall, these are the basic elements I like to consider.
- Fall florals (real, dried or faux)
- Pumpkins
- Organic elements
- Books
- Fall textiles
- Cozy candles
- Rich metallic tones
- Architectural accents
- Coasters
- Artwork
- Family photos
How to Group Items on a Coffee Table Correctly
One common mistake I see when styling a coffee table is grouping items incorrectly.
The majority of the time, height and number is the problem.
It is most visually pleasing to group odd numbers. Three is the magic number, in my opinion.
One, if you are more minimalistic.
Additionally, you want to group items of varying heights. If you combine three items that are all the same height, your grouping will fall flat. Varying all three heights bounces the eye around to create interest. This is why you’ll typically see groups of three varied height candles sold in a set.
One caveat to this design rule is if you are creating a singular line of the same item down the center of the table. (Ex: three votive candles)
How to Create a Fall Color Palette
Next, you’ll want to determine what your fall color palette will be for your coffee table decor.
Some of my favorite autumn color palette combinations are:
- Burnt orange, dark brown, plum, olive
- Deep yellow, light green, black, orange
- Burgundy, gold or copper, cream
- Orange, cinnamon, olive, black
- Pale pink, cream, deep green, brown
- Blue, orange, cream, brown
- Red, plum, green, gold, brown
- Fully neutral with cream, brown, black and a metallic accent of gold or copper
Fall Coffee Table Decor Ideas
The best way to communicate how to style autumn coffee table decor is through images. I’ve styled my family room coffee table several ways to show how easy it is to create groupings and color palettes that are pleasing to the eye.
You can easily use these examples using your own fall decor as well!
How to Decorate Coffee Table Tray for Fall
Trays are a great option for decorating an autumn coffee table.
Trays create a landing zone for the decor so that it feels intentional and cohesive. Using trays makes the tabletop feel organized as well.
I love to group items onto a tray at varying heights.
Pottery happens to be a favorite collection of mine. Group items like these with a metallic element or mini pumpkin to warm it up.
Florals are also a great option for styling fall coffee table trays. They make a quick statement and are so easy to incorporate.
Stacking books or boxes is another great way to style a coffee table tray. And of course, they are perfect for corralling coasters.
I love boxes that serve as both storage and decor. This velvet vintage book is actually a secret box that works great for remotes.
And these woven boxes are absolutely beautiful and would be a great option to hide small toys, craft supplies or crayons for the kiddos.

I love decorating for fall! I already have most of my fall decor out but am finding it a little difficult to incorporate my green houseplants (two spider plants and two zz plants) into the fall theme. Any suggestions? For Christmas/Winter I remove the houseplants to the laundry where they get lots of morning light and are out of the way of all the holiday decor. Should I go ahead and do that?
I personally leave my live plants out year round! I don’t think they detract from seasonal decor since they are living and not faux.
I love to use a large tray on my very large coffee table in the family room. I have 2 toddler great grandchildren. If things are on the tray I can easily remove them or my preferred choice is decorating with unbreakable things like wooden beads, books, etc. I donโt want so many โno,noโsโ when they visit Granny.
Sounds like the perfect combination!
