Elegant Christmas Table Decor (That’s Also Cozy & Simple)
Most people wouldn’t pair cozy/simple and elegant in the same sentence. Cozy and simple usually evokes comfortable, relaxed and homey vibes. On the other hand, elegant typically involves elaborate, fancy and stiff displays. But today, we’re going to design cozy, simple AND elegant Christmas table decor for an inviting and stunning holiday tablescape.

The Foundation for Elegant Christmas Table Decor
We’re hitting the ground running with the number one element to set an elegant holiday table: a luxurious tablecloth.
Elegant tables have the basic foundation of a table cloth made of elegant fabrics or beautiful patterns.
Look for table linens made of:
- Satin/Silk
- Linen
- Velvet
- 100% cotton
- Lace
In addition to a luxurious fabric, you also want to pay attention to color and pattern.
SHOP LINENS
Rich jewel tones or creamy whites are the most elegant color options. Pastels tend to feel more casual.

If you choose a pattern, make sure it is more subtle. You don’t want to compete with the other items you use for your Christmas table decor. Plus, busy patterns tend to feel more kitschy.
Think Outside the Box for Table Linens
Now, if you’re like me, then you may not use a tablecloth on a regular basis.
Since I don’t have a lot of options that I already own for table linens, sometimes I like to thing outside the box.
When I was decorating for Christmas this year, I ordered a velvet quilt for our bed. When it arrived, I couldn’t get the idea out of my head that it would be a beautiful foundation for a Christmas tablescape.

Turns out, a king size quilt folded in thirds works perfectly as a makeshift tablecloth with a built in runner.
The velvet and rich burgundy made this the perfect foundation for an elegant Christmas table.
We will talk about dinnerware in the next section. However, I also opted to add a creamy linen tablecloth set as a diamond to create contrast between my dark velvet base and the dark green dishes.
Layering more than one tablecloth is a great way to add interest without adding bulk.

In the past, I’ve also used:
- Patterned sheets
- Curtains
- Fabric scraps hemmed as runners
- Wrapping paper
- Kraft paper
- Large scarves
- Tulle
Linen Napkins
Next, use linen napkins.
Nothing ruins the feel of an elegant tablescape like a paper napkin.
Thankfully, there are many affordable options that also wash up well.
SHOP NAPKIN RINGS
You can opt to fold it simply in a triangle or rectangle. Use a beautiful napkin ring as an extra piece of decor. Or, learn how to make more intricate folds to dress up the table.
Using Dinnerware as Elegant Christmas Table Decor
Now that we have the linens in place, it’s time for the dinnerware.
Personally, I’m not a huge fan of storing seasonal dishes.
I would much rather use my daily dishes for simplicity sake. However, a set of Christmas dishes that you use every year is also a beautiful tradition.
Using the same dishes every year evokes nostalgia and so many special memories.
Or, you can find a beautiful new set to memorialize a special occasion like:
- first Christmas as a married couple
- baby’s first Christmas
- first Christmas as the hostess
- a celebration Christmas for a major life event or victory, etc.
However you choose to use dinnerware, just ensure that it fits within your whole home color palette you’ve chosen for the year. You can learn more about decorating for Christmas with this roadmap and 27 ways to decorate on a budget.

Don’t be afraid to mix and match dinnerware. Using one solid plate with a pattern salad plate or bowl goes a long way to keep the space from falling flat.
One of the easiest way to create an elegant Christmas tablescape is with pretty glassware.
SHOP DISHES
I love a gold rimmed glass. These beautiful stemless glasses also have a stunning ribbing detail that elevates it even further. Plus, I like that they are low to the table to help prevent accidental spills.
Christmas Decor Staples for a Cozy Tablescape
Finally, you need to choose what actual decor you will use.
A beautiful bouquet is always an elegant option.
However, I personally love the simplicity and coziness of candles and greenery.
In the past, I’ve used lush garland down the center of a table.
This year, I’m using a simple vintage basket as a tray centerpiece. This allows me to easily pick up the entire centerpiece and remove it for when the food needs space on the table.
Layer a few realistic stems of greenery with some battery operated candles for an arrangement that is easy to move without dripping hot wax.
If you don’t plan to remove your centerpiece, then I always love a real pillar or taper candle. That real flame creates the coziest flicker and a beautifully peaceful environment.
I also love to add in metallic elements in this step. Metallic pieces (like brass reindeer or gold bells) escalate the glow from your candles to enhance the entire tablescape.
Create Your Own Cozy & Elegant Christmas Table
