Guest Bedroom Makeover
Our home renovation has been ongoing the last two years. I’ve remodeled or done small makeovers on 90% of our home, but the guest bedroom hasn’t made the cut! Until now.
In this post, I’ll be sharing how I updated our guest bedroom to create a soothing and welcoming space for guests. The key component that lays the foundation for the rest of the room is a soft color palette from the HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams Simply Blissful Color Collection.
I love how these colors work together seamlessly to offer the easiest choice for beautifully coordinated paint colors.
Guest Bedroom Before
Let’s start this makeover with some before photos. When we moved in, the guest bedroom offered this lovely 30 year old stained pink carpet.
We replaced the carpet when we updated the entire basement with a beautiful soft grey luxury vinyl floor.
After that, I painted the trim without regard for the walls, knowing I would be updating the paint colors eventually. And this is how it has sat for almost a year!
The Design Plan: Soft Color Palette
It is finally time to create a space that is welcoming, cozy and serene for my guests! I am excited about using a soft color palette to set the tone for this space. Here is the design plan!
- Update the walls with soothing Gristmill Greige (HGSW2485)
- Customize the closet doors and paint with classic Fundamental White (HGSW4001)
- Add accents to call attention to artwork with Romance (HGSW2067)
- Create a focal point with a faux fireplace mantel
- Update the room with decor and finishing touches
Step 1: Paint the Walls
If you followed along with this process on Instagram, then you know how impressed I was with this paint! Not only was I covering a dark color with a light color, but I didn’t even prime first. And, it still only took one coat. I am sold!
It never ceases to amaze me how paint transforms a space. Updated colors, soothing tones like this soft greige (Gristmill Greige from the HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams Simply Blissful Color Collection), and a room all painted the same color can unify a room so quickly.
Step 2: Update the Closet
The next step in softening the color palette in our guest bedroom was to update the closet doors.
You can see the full tutorial for how I added the DIY trim to these flat panel doors {here}.
It was such an easy update that took builder-grade bi-fold doors to a new level. They now feel custom built and a tad more classy.
I finished out the project by painting them Fundamental White. This is a very true white and provides a beautiful bright finish. I love how this classic white brightens the room and breaks up the wall color.
Step 3: Call Out Artwork with Paint
I think my favorite update to this guest bedroom was adding to the soft color palette with this beautiful blush pink called Romance. I didn’t need to question whether or not these two colors would blend perfectly since they are both a part of the Simply Blissful Color Collection. They’ve been intentionally crafted to work together no matter the color combination.
This large wall needed a little umph, even after I tried out this gorgeous artwork above the bed.
Typically, our first instinct would be to add more decor to a space that feels unfinished. But, part of creative haven making is thinking outside the box.
In this case, that literally meant painting a box!
I plan to do a full tutorial on how I created this simple addition to my artwork soon.
I love how it draws attention to the artwork, makes it feel larger, and adds a pop of soft color to an otherwise neutral room.
Step 4: Shop the House + Add Decor
The final step in updating our guest bedroom with a soft color palette was keeping the decor soft and inviting as well.
I wanted this guest bedroom to feel like our guest could walk in and claim this space as their own. I didn’t want it to feel like “Sarah’s bedroom,” but rather a comfortable environment that puts them at ease.
So, I chose to keep the decor minimal, the layers cozy, and the amenities thoughtful.
Some light reading materials are always appreciate as guests settle in for the night. And a tray with flowers and drinking glasses are helpful as they wake and start the day.

Next Steps
I absolutely love how this soft color palette from the HGTV HOME® by Sherwin-Williams Simply Blissful Color Collection completely transformed this space!
My next step is to build out our old mantel to create a faux fireplace on the wall opposite the bed. My goal is to add to the ambiance and coziness of this serene space.

Thanks Becky! It was a fun project!
Sarah this room is stunning. It turned out amazing. I followed along in stories and not only did you give me two great ideas/tricks, you gave me some much needed motivation to finish painting my master bedroom. The trick for crisp paint lines was one I had heard before, but using glaze, which makes it too shiny if you prefer a more matte finish, so using the same color over the tape first was a genius ? moment. Also, I cannot believe what a difference painting that box behind the art made… I have a piece of art above my king bed and it never seemed quite done… I think this will do the trick nicely. Thank you for sharing your home and faith always. โค๏ธ
