How to Hide Electronics: The Problem
Before
Let’s take a quick step back and look at how this space looked when we first moved in. Fish tank in the wall. Enough said? Large indoor aquariums may be some people’s slice of pie but it wasn’t mine. After convincing the children that the fishies would go to good homes, we removed this wall and opened the space to create a dining room.
I’ll share all about the renovation process for this room in an upcoming post! However, for now, I want to share how we solved the problem of how to hide electronics located smack dab in the middle of our double sided fireplace!
Previously, all of the phone lines, cable lines and internet cables were hidden in these open shelves attached to the aquarium wall. The thought of relocating all of those lines made my husband a little queasy ๐ so we decided to build them further into the wall with new framing since the space was already open.
How to Hide Electronics: The Solution
After
With the electronics contained in a small box in the wall the final solution to hiding them came with a few options.
- Simply organize the electronics and frame the box with trim.
- Build a door to the box.
- Hinge artwork overtop.
- Use decor!

The first two options were a no-go for me. I knew I wanted the electronics completely hidden so #1 was out. #2 would have been a fine solution except my husband was worried about how hot the electronics would get in an enclosed space. #3 was my first option, however, I was concerned the heat issue would still pose a problem and may damage artwork.
Therefore, I went shopping! I’ve loved these hanging canvases for a long time. They are whimsy and casual while adding tons of interest to a space. It also ticked all the boxes from a practical standpoint because I was able to hanging it an inch out from the wall to let heat release easily.
When we need to access the electronics it is simple to swing the canvas to the side and let it plop back into place when we are done. Plus, it will be a simple change to make with the seasons! As you can see below, there are many options available for hanging canvases! This specific canvas is by Cloth and Cabin.
Now, I’ve given you quite the sneak peak into our dining room remodel so you have to make sure and come back when I give the full update on the renovation process and all the finishing touches! ๐
I hope that this has helped spur some ideas for how you might hide electronics which are stored in an unfortunate space!
