Modern Farmhouse Basement Remodel | The Plans
Are you looking for ideas to update your outdated basement? I’m excited to kick off a five post series to show you practical ways to transform your space into the modern farmhouse basement of your dreams.
Today I’ll be focusing on all of the “befores” as well as my design plans. I hope that they inspire you and that you’ll follow along on our remodel!

The Basement Before
When we moved into our new home 8 months ago I was excited to have a finished basement. Our previous home did not, and we always wished we could finish the space. However, this space isn’t exactly my style. Right away I painted the basement walls and we’ve lived with it this way for some time. Now I’m ready to create the modern farmhouse basement of my dreams!
The majority of our basement is outdated aesthetically, but is a really lovely space with tons of potential. It offers a huge walkout slider to our back patio off of the family room, two bedrooms, a large laundry room (which I just remodeled for $100!), a third bathroom and a large rec room. It has all of the space we could ever need and just needs updates to make it our own.
If you’ve read my book, you know that I am a huge proponent of making your home a haven through a simple 10 step process. So I am following that process to recreate our basement! And it all starts with flooring.
5 Types of Flooring
The number one item I wanted to change was the flooring. Within the basement there are currently 5 different types of flooring. The majority of the space has this original (aka 20+ years old) cream carpet and it is stained to high heavens. Red stains, black stains, purple stains. I don’t even want to think about the filth that lives in 20+ year old carpet.
If nothing else, I just wanted to get rid of a potential allergy hazard and update our flooring with something durable and classic. Beyond that, the rest of the basement offers blue tile, pink carpet, and red tile. Not exactly my design choices.
Carpet Be Gone
So our first step in this remodel was to remove all of the existing flooring. We took out the carpet ourselves and have hired the floor installation company to remove the tile. My husband is eternally grateful that he doesn’t have to tackle that part of the project. ๐
Modern Farmhouse Basement Plan
To remedy the “five different types of flooring” problem, we chose to replace all of the flooring with luxury vinyl plank from Lumber Liquidators. Not only will this be a beautiful solution to the allergy issue, but will also offer continuity and durability to the entire space.
We’ve had such a great experience with Lumber Liquidators in the past, so I knew I wanted to work with them on this project. Their customer service has been awesome and their product selection is vast. After visiting the store, we quickly learned from their associates what would be the best flooring option for our basement. The store associate really took his time with us to make sure he recommended the right product.
He asked questions like,
- Is there potential for water seepage?
- Do you have kids?
- Do you have animals?
- What is the subfloor?
- What will you use the space for?
- Is it a high traffic area?
When we were done sorting out the practical issues I got to have fun with the aesthetic side of design! I brought home three different types of luxury vinyl plank because it offers the best durability for our space. I love how this product looks like real wood! You can even see on the bottom sample that some varieties offer the “hand scraped” look.
Some samples showed more wood grain than others, there are so many colors to choose from, and I also had to consider plank width. Truly, upon entering the store I was overwhelmed with the number of choices. However, after narrowing down the practical side of things with the associate first, I was given a much more manageable number of products to choose from. And then it was just fun!
Picking Flooring
So I’m curious if you can guess which flooring we chose?! I always love to get your interaction and opinion when making design choices. Comment below on which style you like the best, or which floor you think that we chose from Lumber Liquidators.
Top: Riverwalk Oak
Middle: Acacia
Bottom: Rose Canyon Pine

It is called Yarn by Magnolia.
Thanks for sharing this article, i really like it.
My pleasure! So glad you liked it.
Sarah,
I had you picking Rose Canyon Pine but I sneaked a peek at the last response and saw you didn’t pick that one so I believe you picked Acacia. I know everything will look good; can’t wait to see how you put everything together. You do such a good job at decorating. I just love your blog site. You are an inspiration!!!!!
jean
Thank you so much Jean! Yes, I wanted lighter floors for this space. I’m excited for it to all come together!
You picked Rose Canyon Pine, didn’t you? (Please say yes, please say yes)
It’s lovely…
Haha I didn’t! But it is certainly lovely!
I bet you picked Riverwalk Oak. ๐ They are all very pretty!
Ding ding ding! I did! And I’m excited to share why in an upcoming post!
I like all three but the Riverwalk Oak is the one I really, really like. It’s light and clean. Whichever you choose, I know you’ll make it work for your space. You have a knack for that! ;o)
Thank you so much! I loved the tone of riverwalk oak as well!
Rose canyon pine! That is my pick. I really like the riverwalk oak but I am thinking too light and the Acacia is to traditional. I am excited to see the outcome. We are in the middle of our bathroom remodel. Three weeks and counting. It is just my husband and I so not too difficult but messy. Biggest blessing is our relationship is growing. We are having fun doing this together. (of course this is only our second room of our entire house remodel haha!) Love your post, blog and can’t wait for my book to arrive. yay!!! Bought one for my daughter and daughter in law too!!
God bless you! Love the verse of the day too!
Janet
Thank you Janet! I’m so glad! And what a blessing to be enjoying the renovation with your hubby!
I love the hand scraped look of the Rose Canyon Pine!
So many love the pine! You aren’t alone!
Those floor options are gorgeous! I’d go for Acacia
Thank you! They have so many beautiful options to choose from.
Sarah, my guess ” Acacia “. Look forward to the finished results.
Thank you Sue! I hope you like what I picked!
Canโt wait to see this finished space! It is going to be amazing iโm Sure!
Thank you so much Tosha!! One month to the final product! Can’t wait.
River walk oak! ??
Good guess Shelby!! ๐ I love that one.
You have such a hard decision to make with picking out the flooring. You have three great options here! Iโm so glad you are getting so close to having your dream basement!
Thank you Adele!! It is definitely going to be a dream!
