Incorporate various textures
Without a healthy mix of texture, a room can fall flat.
If your space feels too matchy-matchy or if it seems a bit cold, it might be a sign that you need to incorporate more texture. Think throw pillows with mixed fabrics, potted plants in glass vases, or wood accents on a coffee table.
The variety of materials can add dimension to your home, leaving things more visually appealing and offering a well-designed look.
Need another way to highlight a mix of textures? Consider using a blend of fabrics in your bedding.
Maybe your duvet and shams are linen while the throw blanket at the edge of your bed is made with wool. You could also add decorative pillows that feature different materials, like velvet, cotton, or suede.

Add dimension with mixed colors and patterns
Similar to the fabrics and materials you choose, designing your home with a variety of colors and patterns is also key. Before all of you neutral lovers skip past this tip, hear me out.
Adding color and pattern doesn’t have to mean bold prints or bright hues. It could be as simple as picking various shades of brown, gray, or even light shades of blue and green.
Maybe you start by draping some colored throw blankets along your couch or hanging art prints along your hallway. Starting slow and building up from there is key (and will ensure that you don’t overdo it.)
Also, a good beginner’s tip is to utilize neutral items that have just a splash of color.
Like a white linen throw pillow with a subtle pattern or a lamp that has a quirky shade. Faux or real plants can also provide a good dose of color and texture.
Play with lighting
I don’t know about you but when I think of spaces that have a particularly cozy feel, my mind always goes to lighting.
There’s something about a space with lots of lamps that instantly gives off a homey vibe.
While adding a lamp to your nightstand or desk is an obvious go-to, utilizing them in more unique places can up your cozy game. Try placing a small lamp on your kitchen counter or going with a floor lamp in your living room.
Not only will this add more character to your space, but having dim lighting in the evenings and early mornings can offer a uniquely inviting feel. Installing light switch dimmers or under-cabinet lighting is another way to achieve this.

Choose your furniture wisely
Certain pieces of furniture just feel more cozy. For example, a plush fabric couch is often more inviting than a cool leather chair.
If you’re starting fresh or you’re simply in the market for some new furniture, consider going with pieces that have a softer look, like a wood coffee table, rattan bar stools, or a linen bed frame.
Because there’s so much you can do with decor, this is not a must, yet it’s nice to keep in mind if you’re just now designing your space.
Create warmth with a rug
Wood and tile flooring both seem to be more and more popular these days. While pretty, neither warrant a particularly cozy feel.
A basic yet impactful way to combat this is by utilizing rugs throughout your home. Sure, you might think to lay one out in your family room or underneath your dining table, but adding runners to your hallway or placing a rug near your front door can make things even more welcoming.
Low pile rugs are generally easier to clean and maintain, but more voluminous options like a shaggy rug or sherpa pick can feel extra soft underneath your feet.

Swap your decor out seasonally
While I only go all-out with decor for Christmas, there’s certainly a case to be made for swapping out your home accents with the shift of each season.
This doesn’t have to be complicated — small tweaks like switching your faux florals or updating your shelf decor can make an impact.
When your home is well-curated to the season you’re in, things will feel more intentional (and to me, that equates to things feeling more cozy.)
Set the tone at your front door
The overall feel of your space starts at your front door, yet it’s an often-forgotten area that deserves more love.
Decorating your porch can give your home a more charming feel and a whole lot more curb appeal. Adding a doormat, some outdoor lighting, and a wreath (non-seasonal) is a good place to start.
Craving something that makes an even bigger statement? Consider creating a small seating area where you can enjoy your morning cup of coffee.
Another unique way to make your home’s entrance cozier is by swapping out the hardware on and near your front door. There are tons of cute door knockers, address signs, and even mail holders that can provide a custom look.

Keep scent in mind
Decor is the main aspect that will impact how you succeed in creating a cozy home, but scent can also dictate how your space feels.
Lighting candles is an obvious and quick way to set a relaxing mood, but making a stovetop simmer can offer especially cozy vibes. This is a great choice during the cooler months, like fall and winter, but it’s also possible to do with lighter and more refreshing ingredients during spring and summer.
Don’t underestimate the details
All in all, there are countless ways that you can make your home cozy.
A lot of this comes down to your personal style and preferences, but the main takeaway is that the details really matter. No element is too big or too small when considering how it will make your space feel.
Whether it’s a furniture choice or a decorative decision, it can impact the energy your home gives off.
One last piece of advice would be to not overthink it (easier said than done, I know.) If something feels cozy to you, that’s all that matters.
Your space is for you, and as long as you feel at home, you’ll know you’ve designed it right.
